Loving More: The Nonprofit Leading the Way on Polyamory

The 411: Heading into its 29th year, Loving More Non-Profit remains the organization people turn to for polyamory awareness, from news, events, and support to resources, activism, and advice, plus anything else you can think of.

Robyn Trask figured out at 24 that monogamy didn’t suit her. A handful of serious one-on-one relationships that fell apart quickly showed her that love is bigger than that.

“I was really pretty much on my own. I thought that something was wrong with me — I couldn’t be monogamous and everybody else could,” she said.

Today Trask leads Loving More Non-Profit as its executive director, and she and her team help people in situations like hers.

“My biggest goal is to let people know there’s a choice,” she said. “We’re not about converting people to polyamory. We’re about letting people have awareness that polyamorous or swinging or other relationship choices go beyond monogamy.”

Educating people and raising awareness

Loving More is a small organization in Loveland, Colorado, but the community it serves is very large.

Members are spread across 20 countries and all 50 states. They range in age from 18 to 90 and include men, women, and people of many sexual orientations.

With a reach like that, Loving More focuses mainly on education and awareness. It publishes authoritative articles by therapists and people with poly experience, puts on yearly conferences and festivals, and runs retreats that teach people about the lifestyle, among other things.

“We love what we do and have a lot of fun, with our main focus being education,” Trask said.

Loving More® is a nonprofit, an educational website, an online community, and a magazine, all devoted to supporting and educating people about polyamory and the issues around it.

Other sites also set out to educate and offer resources, but Loving More presents polyamory from an entirely different angle: that of a small nonprofit.

“I often spend time in different communities around the country, and they’re very different,” she said. “I think one of the challenges of some of the websites out there is they don’t have that perspective of the difference in what it’s like to be a polyamorous person in Alabama versus New York City.”

In the end, love is what it’s all about

Running an organization for nearly 30 years is no small accomplishment, yet the Loving More team still has plenty they want to achieve, such as launching new chapters in every state.

Above all, Loving More aims to turn “polyamory” into a familiar word, lessen the stigma attached to it, and fight laws that discriminate against those who practice it.

“We are very much about relationship choice and supporting individuals and families who choose to live alternatively.”

“What we’re trying to get to now is an acceptance and an understanding that polyamory is about love, just like monogamy. Knowing you’re not alone and that there are people out there, that’s helpful — even if they’re nothing like you, it’s helpful,” Trask said. “The biggest thing I’d like highlighted is that we are very much about relationship choice and supporting individuals and families who choose to live alternatively.”
