Not long ago, I was helping a friend put together her online dating profile. A little more than a year earlier, she’d ended a relationship that lasted seven years, and she felt ready to date again. She hadn’t met her ex online, though, and had never given online dating a try. As a total newbie, she needed a hand.

I got her started on the mainstream dating app I considered the simplest and most straightforward. We built her profile and answered a handful of fun prompts, and then I let her poke around to see how the app worked.

We spoke with Dan Winchester, who founded Free Dating and serves as its CEO. It’s a free online dating site that’s among the UK’s most successful and popular. “I started Free Dating back in 2005,” Dan told us. “I was recently single, and most of the online dating services I tried required a subscription. I was working in web development and online marketing, and I thought that it should be possible to run a dating service for free, funded by advertising.”

Free Dating’s Early Days in the Dating Industry

The dating industry wasn’t meeting Dan’s own needs, and he knew other daters wanted a free online option, too. Back in 2005, the market was far less crowded than it is now. In 2005, the biggest names in online dating today were just beginning to find their footing and build their user bases.

Dan envisioned a dating site that was free from top to bottom. In other words, no hidden charges for extra features such as updating your profile, sending messages, or liking and matching with other users.

According to Dan, dating fatigue among modern daters has hit record-high levels.

Through all those years of change, staying relevant has been a must for Free Dating. It didn’t get there by chasing other apps’ momentum or piling on flashy new features. Free Dating stuck to what it was instead, with its focus on letting daters find dates for free.

On the subject of dating trends, Dan said that one of today’s most common, online dating fatigue, is damaging singles’ chances.

“The most recent trend, dating fatigue, is quite a negative one for the industry,” Dan told us. “Users are getting fed up with poor online dating experiences and are looking for alternatives beyond the traditional apps, and indeed beyond online dating altogether.”

Dan said this common dating issue is an awakening for online dating platform developers: They need to get more serious about putting users first.

“It’s a wake-up call,” Dan told us. “The industry must do everything in our power to put our users at the front and center of everything we do.”

Keeping Scammers and Bad Actors Out

Dan walked us through how Free Dating works. It operates like a lot of classic profile-based dating services, with a toned-down digital dating experience that puts users first.

“We have tended to avoid adding new features, as our users are looking for a simple service, and are perfectly capable of navigating their dating journey without fancy features or the latest AI gimmicks,” Dan told us.

The best dating apps know who they’re serving and cater to those people. If your users want a hookup, the app’s features should reflect it. If they want a committed, long-term relationship, the features will look very different from a hookup app’s.

Safety features, from verification to moderation, should top the priority list for both platforms and users.

Dan knew that what his audience cared about most was free, simple online dating. Rather than getting caught up in trends, he explored ways to improve free, simple dating for his users even further, and responded to what he found.

“The dating industry always likes to talk up the next big thing, such as AI wingmen, virtual reality dating, or whatever the next addition is,” Dan said. “But the reality is, the fundamental nature of online dating has not changed significantly in 20 years, and I don’t think it’s going to change significantly in the next 20 years.”

Free Dating might look simple on the surface, but Dan told us plenty of safeguards are working behind the scenes to keep users protected. Simplicity can’t come at the cost of safety, and Dan said the site has sidestepped that trade-off by relying on top-tier anti-scammer tools.

“Safety is a top priority,” Dan told us. “Free Dating uses some of the most advanced safety and security systems available. It is very rare for a scammer to get past our security systems, and I would wager that we are better than most paid services for avoiding scammers.”

Online Dating’s Ongoing Challenges

A new feature on an app is usually the answer to some problem. Perhaps the matches users received weren’t accurate enough, or perhaps others wanted fuller audio and video messaging options.

Dan doesn’t dispute that the online dating world has changed, but he believes its core nature hasn’t moved: people go online to meet those they might never have been able to connect with otherwise.

For all the new and adjusted features apps have launched over the years, Dan said online daters today run into the same obstacles they faced 20 years ago.

“The eternal problem with online dating is that women often get overwhelmed with unsuitable contacts, whereas men get very little responses from women,” Dan told us. “Many dating services have tried to tackle this with features, but the main problem largely persists.”

Since the spotlight is on you, Dan recommended filling out your profile with as much detail as you can and keeping it true to who you are. Include lots of photos, add some tasteful humor, and have conversation starters ready to go.

“Humans who want to find partners are usually pretty adept at finding them,” Dan told us. “Online dating is just another place to go looking.”
