Feeling a bit burned out on dating apps and sites? You’ve got company. Time Magazine and other outlets say members of Gen Z are deserting dating apps and sites in large numbers. Lots of platforms for online dating are doing just fine, but there’s no doubt that lots of young singles would now rather meet face to face.

That’s where speed dating comes in. Rabbi Yaacov Deyo created it in the late 1990s, and here’s the idea: Speed dating gathers a group of singles in one spot and has them rotate through quick, orderly mini-dates. Rather than swiping through profiles, each participant talks with another for a fixed stretch of time, typically 10 minutes or less, hoping to find a romantic partner.

When speed dating first caught the public’s attention, there were no dating apps or sites yet, but it’s still a real alternative to looking for love online. Some singles get stuck in an endless cycle of messaging, ghosting, and swiping, and speed dating appeals to their wish for results. If you’d rather make first contact face to face, it could suit you well!

The Basics of Speed Dating

Before diving into speed dating, you should understand how events work and what you’re in for. There’s a lot to absorb at a speed dating event! Nobody expects you to be an expert on your first try, but some background knowledge and realistic expectations will help you get the most out of every event.

Preparation is Key

You might be tempted to sign up for whichever speed dating event pops up first and just turn up, but a little research and prep will get you better results. There are tons of different speed dating events, with one for every kind of personality, and finding the right atmosphere goes a long way toward finding the right potential partners.

Naturally, big-city residents have more choices. A small town might hold a handful of events a month, while in places like New York or Chicago, there’s a speed dating event going on somewhere nearly every night. Wherever you live, Eventbrite is a great tool for tracking down local events. Social media, restaurants and bars, and community centers are also good places to look for details.

On Eventbrite, you’ll find plenty of events where singles can mingle.

Most speed dating events are organized around location and age range, with religion and profession close behind. Got a particular interest or hobby? There’s likely an event built around it. Options also include LGBTQ+ nights, events for neurodivergent singles, and even speed dating that benefits charitable causes.

When you find an event you like, do some digging. Speed dating formats differ a bit from one event to the next, but a few rules and format details are nearly universal.

Every speed dating event gives you a set amount of time to meet and chat with each participant. That limit could be as short as 60 seconds or as long as 10 minutes, so find out which it is as part of your preparation.

Look for any rules specific to the event, too. The organizer might have a dress code, or there could be certain topics to avoid or emphasize when you talk with other participants. Read the rules and be sure you understand them before you go.

Speed dating is about meeting a bunch of people quickly and, ideally, walking away with at least one date, so aim to leave the best first impression possible. That means committing fully! If there’s a theme, embrace it with enthusiasm. No need to go overboard, but if it’s a costume event, you should probably give your costume some thought.

Without a set theme, you can’t go wrong with a nice outfit, a little extra polish, and shoes that are comfortable yet presentable, since you’ll likely be moving around. Even if you crave some liquid courage, don’t show up drunk. No one wants to spend even a couple of minutes talking to someone who’s totally intoxicated.

Make every minute count, because once your time with a participant ends, that’s it.

How the Event Is Set Up

Speed dating parties are designed so singles can meet the largest possible number of prospective partners in fairly little time. The basic speed dating format stays the same no matter which event you attend, though you may run into a few variations.

Rotating Tables

Speed dating resembles musical chairs in a few ways. The room is set up ahead of time with a predetermined number of tables for two, and, as in musical chairs, participants switch seats at regular intervals. Unlike musical chairs, though, the emcee never removes any chairs during the event. There are several possible variations on this setup, and many speed dating events actually use a musical cue to signal that it’s time to change seats.

Photo of Speed Dating

No two speed dating events are identical, but they all follow roughly the same structure.

To keep things organized, one group of participants typically stays put while the other group rotates. At some events, for instance, the women all stay seated and the men switch tables at each interval. At others, everyone changes seats, with just one rule: No one should land the same partner a second time.

Not every speed dating event uses two-person tables, or tables of any kind, but most organizers find that two-tops are an easy way to give each pair enough privacy for a quick conversation while also being easy to arrange and clear away.

Whatever the setup looks like at your event, plan on moving around the room throughout the night.

Time Limits for Conversations

Speed dating has another key feature: a time limit. Since the whole purpose is to connect briefly with many people in a single evening, each conversation gets cut off at some point. Expect the emcee to state how long each mini-date lasts right at the beginning, so everyone’s on the same page.

How long you get with each potential partner can vary, but there’s a reason it’s called speed dating! Plan on anywhere from one to ten minutes to make a first impression and get a sense of the other person. You’re more likely to land at the short end of that range than the long end, so factor that in as you prepare mentally for the event.

Scorecards and the Matching Process

Finally, speed dating usually involves a scorecard of some sort. That may sound intimidating, but it says nothing about your ultimate worth as a person. Some events use a very basic scoring system that simply signals romantic interest.

Matching begins at random. Plenty of speed dating events hand every participant a random number, then pair numbers up for round one. After that, you might be asked to move one seat to your left or right at each interval, or the organizers might use another method that keeps traffic flowing steadily and makes sure everyone gets to talk to everyone.

When the event wraps up, the organizers gather the scorecards and give every participant contact details for any dates who liked them. How that works varies by event, but you’ll usually receive your matches’ contact details, such as an email address or phone number. You might also get one final scorecard tallying your mutual matches. The emcee will likely explain what to expect.

Tips for Speed Dating Success

In speed dating, everything hinges on first impressions, so getting the most from your speed dates means concentrating on showing your best self. You won’t have much time to get to know other participants or win them over, so invest some effort in practice, preparation, and planning. Be sure you can convey who you are and what you want in a creative, engaging way. Just keep it short!

Break the Ice Without Making Things Awkward

Before you jump into speed dating, the first skill to polish is how to break the ice without stalling the conversation; the goal is an opener that gets people talking. Reddit users have plenty of opinions on the subject, but we’d rather back icebreakers supported by behavioral science.

Open each speed date with a thoughtful, original question.

People love talking about what they’re passionate about, so icebreakers built around the other person’s career, lifestyle, hobbies, or interests can spark a fast bond. And that bond is even more certain when you discover something you both enjoy! Even if your potential date has very different interests, though, opening with that topic can lead to a lively conversation.

Or try some quirky but intriguing questions: “What three wishes would you ask a genie for?” or “Would you rather sing or dance?” Icebreakers like these can offer a window into someone’s personality.

At the very least, have one thoughtful, interesting opening line ready, and rehearse it ahead of time. Otherwise, you may end up flustered, stumbling through “So, how are you tonight?” over and over while your speed dating partners lose interest.

Listen and Engage With Finesse and Distinction

Listening to the answers you get matters just as much as opening with the right words. Everyone wants to feel heard, and most people enjoy being paid attention to. Follow-up questions, attention to detail, and other signs that you care about your speed dating partners’ answers will all boost your chances of landing a date.

You’ll find tips and tricks for looking engaged and being a better listener, yet the most effective approach is simply to slow down. Yes, each session has a time limit, but give every potential date the same respect and interest you’d bring to a more typical first date. Keep an eye on the clock without letting it push you into dominating the conversation or talking over your potential partner.

Manage Your Nerves and Anxiety The Right Way

Feeling nervous heading into a speed dating event is normal, be it your first event or your fiftieth. You’re basically going to a string of auditions within an hour or two, and a single one alone would make most people nervous. Nerves are perfectly natural, but you need to manage your anxiety so it doesn’t sabotage your chances.

Quite a few speed dating events happen at bars and clubs, so knocking back some liquid courage might seem like the obvious fix. A drink or two really can help you relax, but go beyond that and you’ll probably make a poor showing. Staying sober will do more for you on your speed dating journey.

Go easy on the drinks at a speed dating event.

Many of the tricks people use to calm down and tame their pre-date jitters work just as well for speed dating. Some simple ideas are easy to put into practice. Get ready ahead of time, which includes coming up with icebreakers and working out how you’d respond to your own questions. Choose an outfit for the event that’s comfortable and makes you feel attractive.

Above all, remember to breathe, and remind yourself that every person you’ll talk to came to make new connections, the same as you.

The Perks of Speed Dating

Young singles are turning to in-person ways of meeting people for plenty of reasons, and dating app fatigue is only part of it. Speed dating offers lots of potential benefits, particularly for busy people who may not have time to spend searching for the right partner.

It’s Efficient

Finding the right match is much easier when you meet a group of people in one go instead of one at a time. Speed dating lets you squeeze a batch of first meetings into an hour or two rather than spreading them over weeks of more traditional first dates.

Events differ in how many potential dates they offer, but you’ll still encounter more people in a short span than daily life would normally put in your path, so the odds of finding the right person quickly go up. And because each speed dating event caps its attendance, you’re less prone than on dating apps and sites to being overwhelmed by too many options.

Low Stakes

Speed dating keeps first contact with potential partners low-stakes. Unlike on a blind date, you get to mingle and scope out your conversation partners before taking a seat, and the event’s structure takes the pressure off. If things go badly with one person, after all, you’ll be finished and on to your next date within minutes.

There’s no hour-plus of conversation to fill with one person, and thanks to the scorecards, you never have to tell someone you’re not interested, or hear someone reject you to your face. That frees you to focus on each person without getting stuck in your head.

Handled by Pros

Speed dating organizers know what they’re doing, which makes it much easier for participants to relax and have fun. Not every event is run by a dating expert, but the same organization or group usually hosts events regularly, which keeps things running smoothly.

Organizers take care of all the logistics at speed dating events.

Speed dating events are run by an emcee, typically with a few volunteers working behind the scenes. So you can relax: It’s not your job to make sure the event goes well. Your only jobs are meeting the other participants, starting conversations, and doing your best to impress. When everyone can concentrate on finding a spark, it’s easier for all involved.

Challenges and Things to Consider

Speed dating is an efficient way to look for love, but it still comes with challenges and possible pitfalls to think about. For a smooth speed dating experience, think these issues over and make peace with them before you plunge into a sea of rapid-fire conversations.

Time is of The Essence

It might seem obvious, but the key to speed dating success is conveying your personality, and getting a sense of other people’s, within a few minutes. If you tend to talk a lot or deal with time blindness, you could run into trouble with your potential dates.

The simplest fix is to practice ahead of the event. Set a timer on your phone and work on any habit you have of dominating conversations. With a bit of effort, it’s not a hard problem to solve, and you’ll likely see the payoff in other parts of your life, too.

Rejection is Going to Happen

However good you are at talking to people, you won’t impress 100% of the people you meet at a speed dating event. If rejection is hard for you to accept, speed dating may be a struggle.

Learning to cope with rejection in healthy ways is a vital skill, and you’ll definitely need it if you want to try speed dating. It isn’t easy to develop, but it will serve you well in other areas of life too. Keep your expectations in check, and remember that the goal is finding the right date rather than any date at all.

Ages Skew Older

Gen Z singles are showing growing interest in matchmaking and in-person dating events, yet the bulk of speed dating parties are still geared toward older singles. Church-sponsored events in particular tend to draw singles over 40, partly because of the changing makeup of church membership.

“While the drop in Christian affiliation is particularly pronounced among young adults, it is occurring among Americans of all ages.” — Pew Research Center

If you’re in your 20s, tracking down a speed dating event aimed at younger singles can be tough. You may need to open yourself up to dating people a bit older, particularly if you’re after something long-term instead of a casual date.

The Events Cannot Guarantee Matches

Speed dating comes with no guarantees. However large the event and however much you practice, you can’t know whether you’ll meet the right person to date.

If you get frustrated easily, speed dating might set you off. Even in a room of 50 other people, the right chemistry simply may not be there. Knowing that going in is essential, and it will actually help you enjoy your speed dating adventure more. The only sure thing about speed dating: By the end of the event, you’ll have met a bunch of people.

Where Speed Dating Came From

Credit for inventing speed dating goes to Rabbi Yaacov Deyo, who dreamed it up in the late 1990s, though some earlier gatherings followed a similar path. The 19th-century tradition of New Year’s Calling looks strikingly like speed dating: Eligible bachelors made the rounds of their social circles, calling on eligible young women who were dressed to the nines. Each visit was short, usually just a few minutes. It’s not quite the same as everyone attending one event together, but it’s close.

Once the telephone arrived, social calls slowly fell out of fashion, and so did these speed-dating-style gatherings. Likewise, the early boom in Rabbi Deyo’s speed dating idea faded as the arrival of dating sites and apps online made it simpler to compare potential partners without meeting them at all.

Now, though, as young singles retreat from dating sites and apps, speed dating is having a second boom. New York City alone has hundreds of speed dating events each week, run by all sorts of companies, churches, and nonprofit organizations.

Success Stories and Testimonials

Pinning down an exact success rate for speed dating is hard, since nobody really tracks the overall numbers. Events are too numerous and too spread out around the world to count how many produce successful matches. Still, both individuals and speed dating companies have success stories showing that at least some participants meet their match at these events.

The speed dating event that Nika Kabiri of the Huffington Post attended didn’t lead to love, but it did teach her something about her own experience of being single. She enjoyed herself, made new acquaintances, and came away with fresh perspective on romance and on interacting with others, which is a benefit in its own right.

Aaron and Ragna met at a 25Dates event after Ragna volunteered to step in as a participant because the numbers of men and women were uneven. The two eventually married, and they even had a child together by the time they gave their testimonials.

Ditch or Date keeps a full list of success stories, with participants reporting results that range from a good time to a casual fling. A wedding or two even made the list!

Pre-Dating, a nationwide speed dating service, has had loads of success.

Pre-Dating boasts plenty of success stories from happy participants, among them engaged and newly married couples who met at the company’s speed dating events.

There’s no promise that speed dating will lead you to your dream partner, but the success stories show it can work. Put in the effort, and you could head home having found a casual dating match, or even a love that lasts a lifetime.

Speed Dating Is Efficient, Proactive, and Face to Face

If online dating platforms are wearing you out, speed dating offers an efficient alternative: a low-pressure way to get to know lots of potential partners all at the same time. The events are simple, fun, and high-energy, and you’ll get a better read on your chemistry than you would from a typical dating profile and a handful of texts.

If you’re up for circulating around a room and meeting a dozen people in a single night, give speed dating a try!
