Spend even a little time on a dating app and you’ll see how common it is for people to want no-strings-attached (NSA) relationships and dating. People phrase it differently on their profiles (anything from “seeking something casual” to “short-term fun”), but it all boils down to one thing: they want a good time with no pressure.

NSA relationships provide casual sex and intimacy with no pressure on partners to accept a label, or to move toward something more serious and long-term. As fun as they can be, though, NSA relationships aren’t right for everyone.

We’ll walk you through what NSA relationships are and how to handle them, whether you’re planning a hot girl summer or just can’t figure out why anybody would want one.

What Defines an NSA Relationship

You may also hear NSA relationships called “friends with benefits,” “situationships,” or “flings.” More than anything, these connections are defined by how casual they are.

Marriage, future kids, and your five-year plan probably won’t come up in an NSA relationship, since the point is to enjoy its physical perks in the here and now.

Absence of Commitment

Partners in a conventional monogamous relationship commit by promising each other physical and emotional exclusivity, and cheating is frowned upon. NSA relationships, on the other hand, don’t call for that kind of commitment.

Low commitment

Since there’s no boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner label to commit to, you’ll probably be free to see other people and have sex with more than one partner. If you’re up for it, you could spend Thursday with your no-strings partner, meet somebody new on Friday, and head out on yet another date Saturday!

A Focus on Physical Intimacy

Ultimately, NSA relationships revolve around sex, and that can be wonderful! Because the focus is on physical intimacy, you and your partner have the freedom to text each other and hook up any time you like.

Picture it as an ongoing booty call: you’re there for each other in moments of, well, need. Just remember there’s no obligation afterward to treat your partner to a nice dinner.

Limited Emotional Involvement

With no pressure to commit to something more serious, or to have the conversations that come with that, the emphasis stays on fun. You and your NSA partner can still be friendly, though.

In fact, if you really hit it off with your “friend with benefits,” you’re welcome to grab lunch and have a great conversation before going home to hook up.

Limited emotion

It simply means there’s much less expectation of emotional support. An NSA partner probably shouldn’t be asking you for an airport pickup, the kind of favor you’d do for someone in a long-term relationship with you.

Nor should this person be the one you go to for comfort after a bad day at work.

Mutual Understanding of the Relationship’s Casual Nature

Couples in traditional relationships tend to plan things together, from what to eat for dinner to where to put down roots. Serious partners make sacrifices to support one another.

But as long as you both understand the arrangement the same way, your love life won’t demand as much of that kind of investment.

You should both take it as a given that things are casual and that either of you could be dating others. It also needs to be clear on both sides that you each have your own life, and your NSA partner won’t always be available to you, let alone exclusively.

The Perks of NSA Relationships

If you’ve been pouring energy into finding a serious relationship, an NSA arrangement could let you redirect that effort inward and concentrate on yourself.

You can have your fun and still enjoy time alone, minus the drama and emotional ups and downs that commitment so often brings.

Freedom to Do as You Please

Casual daters get to go wherever they like, whenever they like, with whoever they like. With NSA dating, nothing is off-limits when it comes to romance and socializing.

Freedom

People often link relationships with giving up freedom: Fridays out are over because your partner declared it date night. Time with your own friends shrinks because you’ve now got plans with your partner’s friends.

An NSA relationship expects none of that. Since it’s all about hooking up, your plans can stay just as they are!

No Jealousy or Emotional Ties

NSA relationships center on sex so you can enjoy physical intimacy without the hurt of emotional attachment. Done right, neither of you can cheat, because you aren’t in a truly committed relationship.

You won’t have potential infidelities to argue about, and because you’re both free to see others whenever you want, ideally there won’t be any jealousy either. If they’ve found someone new, so have you.

Opportunity & Self-Discovery

You and your NSA partner can experiment with anything in bed without worrying how it will affect your romantic life. And if you choose to take advantage, you can try things with other partners you meet, too.

Exploration

New partners can introduce you to all sorts of likes and dislikes, helping you learn more about yourself and enjoy sex more every time.

Technically, you’re still single, and all that free time leaves you lots more room for self-discovery outside the bedroom.

Frequent Challenges and Misconceptions

No-strings dating sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Not always. In reality, single people can find NSA relationships hard to manage.

Promising there will be no jealousy is easy, but we’re human, and our relationships don’t always unfold the way we plan. Confusion happens a lot, and so do double standards that can spoil the experience for some people.

Potential for Misunderstandings & Hurt Feelings

You can go into an NSA arrangement vowing not to get attached, but sex is an intimate act, and it’s bound to bring you closer.

Misunderstandings happen

One common NSA misunderstanding happens when one partner feels used because the relationship is too focused on sex. I’ve been there myself, catching myself wishing we’d go on real dates even though our casual relationship wasn’t like that.

Hurt feelings also often come up when a partner skips sexual aftercare out of fear that it’ll get too emotional. Holding back like that leaves the other person feeling neglected.

Things can also get awkward when a romantic partner talks about the other hookup buddies they’re seeing right now.

Even if they’re technically allowed, moments like these tend to make daters uneasy.

Confusion About the Rules

Confusion typically comes up when partners picture different parameters for the relationship. Because NSA relationships are less serious, the two of you may never have sat down to talk through the rules of engagement in detail.

Once the relationship is underway, though, you may wish you’d agreed on some rules, and that feeling on its own can be confusing and lonely.

Say, for instance, you’re both free to date other people casually, but then your partner “catches feelings” for another person and starts telling you about wanting to take her on dates. What then? We’ll get into how to handle tough conversations like this below.

Gendered Double Standards

Sadly, society celebrates promiscuous men while shaming women who are just as sexually active. When conflict comes up, women in NSA relationships may see male partners rush to brand them obsessed or clingy.

Women can be players

Social norms discourage women from having sex or enjoying sexual pleasure without emotional attachment, and women often get called slutty simply for being in an NSA relationship.

Whatever your gender, we urge you to stay mindful of how you talk to your partner and about them. Don’t assume things.

If double standards make you feel that the connection isn’t serving you anymore, feel free to step back and come back whenever you like.

3 Tips on Communication and Consent

An NSA relationship only pays off if you communicate openly and stay receptive to feedback the whole way through. Consent is required at every moment. For this kind of relationship to work, both people need to be on the same page, in the bedroom and out of it.

1. Establish Boundaries & Expectations Upfront

Terms and conditions tend to go unspoken or stay vague, but it’s smart to tackle issues early. Tell each other exactly what you want:

  • Nothing serious, just sex
  • Romantic dates and casual sex, but not a relationship
  • Sexual encounters plus a few friendly hangouts
  • Polyamorous or open relationships

If behavior starts to shift, revisit these expectations regularly.

Boundaries can also cover activities and behaviors other than sex. If you’d rather not know who else your partner is sleeping with, say so!

2. Respect Each Other’s Autonomy

You’re both adults, which means you each have the agency to voice your desires and ask for what you want. And the lack of a committed relationship is never a reason to disregard consent.

Respect isn't optional.

Because an NSA relationship is noncommittal, it should highlight each partner’s autonomy and their right to pull out of any interaction that doesn’t feel good, at any time.

3. Don’t Try to Turn a Hookup Into a Love Story

Odds are you both understood the arrangement from the moment you started seeing each other. It’s natural and normal to catch romantic feelings for a partner, but if you don’t expect your partner to return them, try to end the relationship the same way it started.

Take it from me: cutting things off is easier than waiting around while it drags on! Letting go hurts more than anything at first, but hanging on just to stay connected in some form is much worse over time.

No Strings, but Still Respect

Approach a new connection open-minded, see the person you’re with as someone whole, with many-sided desires (not merely a piece of meat), and an NSA relationship can be hugely rewarding.

NSA relationships offer no end of chances for fun through sexual and personal exploration. Free of commitment’s strings, the ways you can connect are limitless.

Still, open communication and honest talk about boundaries are essential to making it work. Keep checking in with each other, honor the relationship you’ve agreed on, and you’ll discover a kind of pleasure all its own in the dating world.
