Ever dated someone while a sinking feeling nagged at you from the back of your mind? The question keeps coming up: “Is this person actually into me, or are they wasting my time?” If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company.

The singles I work with tell me this constantly: “They seem like they’re into me when I’m with them, but when we are apart, I don’t hear a thing but crickets.”

A low-effort dating match is someone who shows minimal effort in building a relationship — inconsistent communication, last-minute plans, and little curiosity about your life. These behaviors often signal emotional unavailability or lack of real interest.

I understand. All you want is clarity about what someone intends. But here’s what I’ve learned… low-effort people don’t walk around wearing signs that read “I will waste your time.” NO! They might arrive saying all the right things and sweep you off your feet.

They may act interested, but over time you’ll spot some “not so great” patterns starting to show up. Certain red flags tell you all you need to know about someone.

Below, I’ll walk you through five telltale signs of a low-effort match and how to quit wasting your time.

Sign #1: What They Say Doesn’t Match What They Do

I dated so many people like this: the overpromiser who always underdelivers.

Honestly, I’d call these low-effort daters very good salespeople. They tell you exactly what you’d like to hear, and their profiles are packed with buzzwords such as “whirlwind romance,” “building a life together,” and “shower you with gifts and affection.”

They’ll tell you how amazing you are, that you’re everything they’ve been searching for, that it just clicks.

They may make lovely promises such as:

  • “I can’t wait to hang out with you.”
  • “My parents are going to love you.”
  • “I can see us traveling the world together and having a blast.”

But ask them when you’re actually making plans, and weeks pass. Excuses pop up. A plan never materializes.

Somehow they’ve got a knack for saying just the right thing, the kind that keeps you floating on cloud nine as you wait for that “one day.” Meanwhile, you don’t notice that real progress in the relationship keeps getting pushed into the future.

Talk is cheap, and words come easily. Anyone can hand you the right line all day long. What really counts is a person’s character and whether they follow through on what they say.

Any time you see a gap between someone’s promises and what they actually deliver, treat it as information. Don’t brush it off. Don’t explain it away. Don’t make excuses on their behalf.

If someone is truly interested, they’ll make it happen. They call when they say they will. They nail down plans. Their actions will show you, and make you feel, that you’re a priority.

Sign #2: They Do All the Talking & Never Ask About You

Ever hung up the phone or wrapped up a date feeling totally wiped out? As if the person had drained you of every last bit of energy? They talked the entire time and hardly asked you one question.

You’re left sitting there thinking…“Does this person really know anything about me?”

Even more irritating, you now know all about their job, their struggles, what they had for lunch… and not once did they stop and ask, “What is going on with you?”

When you talk to your date, it should feel well-balanced, meaning you talk as much as you listen. They ask you questions, and you ask them questions.

Let me tell you: dating takes two people. That means both of you put in effort to get to know each other and learn about each other’s lives.

When someone never asks you questions, it means one of two things: 1) they’re deeply self-absorbed (YUCK!); 2) building a genuine connection with you simply isn’t something they want.

Either way, that should be an obvious dealbreaker.

Someone who likes you will naturally be curious about you. They’ll want to know what excites you, what you care about, what your life is like, and what you dream of achieving. The conversation won’t be one-sided.

Notice how often they steer the conversation back to you. Not shallow questions, real ones.

  • What do you love most about your job?
  • What have you always dreamed of trying?
  • What do you care about most?

That kind of curiosity ranks among the most important green flags out there.

Sign #3: It’s Always on Their Terms

Date a time waster and you may notice a one-sided pattern. They always seem to be busy, and they make last-minute plans you’re expected to work around.

They never take your schedule into account or ask when you’re free.

Instead, you get texts like “Hey, you free tonight?” with zero advance notice.

A healthy relationship takes time to grow. Both partners have to give to the relationship to ensure it continues to flourish. It doesn't happen on its own.

They don’t put any real effort into planning something special. It’s more like “Hey, let’s hang out at my house and Netflix and chill.”

It always suits them. You’re the one who has to drop everything to fit around their life and their schedule.

This might sting, but when someone treats you like this, they’re showing you they aren’t that into you. They’re putting in as little as possible so their own needs get met.

Sign #4: You’re Not a Priority

If someone is really into you, you’ll feel like a priority. They’ll plan a proper date in advance and ask, “What works for you?” They’ll make the effort so you feel valued, instead of squeezing you in at the last minute.

Low-effort time wasters give the bare minimum. They tend to send one-word texts, maybe even the dreaded “k.”

Here’s a good test:

  1. Pull up your text threads.
  2. Count how many messages you’ve sent them over the past week.
  3. Next, count how many they’ve sent you.
  4. Ask yourself: Do their texts match yours in length? Are they asking just as many questions? Are they ever the one who starts the conversation?
  5. Assess: Do they try to set up plans with you, or do they act like a pen pal who’s keeping you on a hook?

When plans are always last-minute or the dating feels low-effort, that pattern shows you’re just an option. Let me remind you: you are NOT anyone’s convenience.

Pick someone who picks you. The right person will make you a priority.

Sign #5: Hot-and-Cold Energy

This one always left me so anxious. I hated it when people I dated pulled this on me. It’s the ultimate breadcrumbing move.

One week, they’re completely in your world. Good-morning texts arrive. Conversations run long. They’re actually talking about plans. You start thinking, okay, this is really going somewhere…

Then, out of nowhere, they vanish completely.

Naturally, you start to panic. You reach out. Maybe you ask what’s up. And naturally, NOTHING! Just radio silence, for hours or even days.

Then they reappear as if nothing happened.

  • “Hey, I’ve been so busy.”
  • “Sorry, things got crazy.”
  • “I didn’t see your text until now.”

And the whole cycle begins again.

Breadcrumbers play mind games: fully invested one moment, totally gone the next, on a loop.

It isn’t chemistry. It isn’t a sign they’re scared of how much they like you. Bluntly put, it points to emotional unavailability. Or worse, the person is leading you on so they can get what they need without committing to you or offering anything in return.

How to Handle a Low-Effort Match

You can’t fix this by trying harder or proving you’re worthy. The problem is theirs. Perhaps they fear commitment or have some deep-seated insecurity. Or maybe they’re genuinely just busy. Whatever the reason, it isn’t your problem.

You need to end things. Text or in person both work, but be firm.

  • “Hey, this isn’t working for me, and I think we should see other people.”
  • “I don’t feel I’m getting what I need from this relationship, so I need to move on.”
  • “We have a lot of fun together, but I’m looking for a commitment, not just fun.”

You deserve better than someone who makes you anxious and keeps you guessing. Love that’s real, and healthy relationships, rest on certainty and safety.

Be Clear and Upfront. Don't play games. Talk to your date about your expectations and desires. Getting clarity early will save you time in the long run.

Listen to what your nervous system is telling you. If you feel that push-pull energy, or you can’t tell where you stand, please walk away. You’re wasting your time on someone who has no plans to commit to you.

Remember the old dating saying: If he wanted to, he already would have!

My Takeaway: Stop Chasing Avoidant Attachment

I want to confess something that kept breaking my heart, so you can steer clear of it. I used to think that when someone pulled away, I had to try harder. Make myself more available. Bend to what they needed. Try to win them over. That was a BIG mistake.

All it led to was one-sided relationships in which I did all the work and got almost nothing back. The most crushing part was that I was training them to walk all over me like a doormat. My behavior told them that settling for low effort was fine with me. Sadly, I was chasing when I should have been choosing.

Once I changed my mindset and began choosing instead of chasing, I quit dating low-effort matches and cut loose all the time wasters. Along the way, I learned to redirect my energy toward finding someone who made me a priority, who accepted me right where I was, and who matched my effort. And he’s the one I chose to marry.

That’s my hope for YOU…be the chooser!
