Our dating experts guide readers step-by-step through relationship challenges and romantic decisions in our popular series of advice articles.

Picture yourself single in the early 1600s, scanning the local paper and coming across this personal ad:

“A good magician and magnetic healer wishes to meet a little blonde song-and-dance or elocution lady, from 20 to 30 years; if suited will make you a kind husband and nice home in the West; give height and weight in first letter.”

Chances are you’d circle the classified and mail a reply by post. A 20th-century single would have dialed the number printed in the ad. Once the internet took off in the 1990s, you could fire off an instant message to a potential match.

Thanks to the online dating site, singles can connect and message one another virtually without ever meeting face to face.

Dating sites have transformed how we build romantic relationships. Rather than replying to public ads, singles can now meet privately online and trade messages from their phones. Newspapers may have mostly faded away, but centuries on, a dating site serves the same purpose: helping people land a relationship, whether personal, romantic, or sexual.

A dating site isn’t just a meeting spot — it’s a matchmaker and a wingman all by itself. Keep reading to learn why these modern routes to love, intimacy, and sex have become essential to dating today.

The Core Ingredients

A handful of core features make online love possible. They vary from platform to platform, but many industry standards have been in place since the 1990s.

So most popular dating sites follow a similar setup, whether they cater to LGBTQ+ people, singles after hookups or relationships, or some other specific interest.

User Profiles

The people on dating apps and sites are all after some kind of connection. For some, that’s a casual hookup; others are set on landing a relationship.

Signing up is usually free, and users build profiles that blend photos with personal details. Profile questions and requirements differ from site to site.

It Benefits You to Complete All Profile Sections.

Most sites ask for a few basics: age, location, and orientation. From there, users can choose to flesh out their profiles with details like their job, education, religion, interests, and lifestyle preferences (i.e., whether or not they want kids).

Brief bios and answers to prompts can also show off personality quirks.

A user profile exists to make a strong first impression, since it’s the first thing other users see when they’re looking for dates. So make yours count and show your best side.

Be honest about who you are, with current photos and accurate details. Make sure you stick to the site’s rules on what’s appropriate, too. On Bumble, for example, a photo where you’re holding a weapon might earn you a permanent ban.

Matching Algorithms

Match algorithms drive the platform and make sense of everyone who’s signed up.

The more of the available information users take advantage of, the likelier they are to match or connect. Once a user spells out preferences (say, a type, gender, or particular age range), the algorithm serves up profiles of people who fit them.

Match Algorithms Look for Compatibility Signs.

How does the site figure out what kind of person someone wants? A user’s swiping patterns, combined with the details they’ve entered, help point the site toward potential matches.

AI plays a growing role in online dating, and plenty of singles now use it to write or polish their profiles. YourMove AI, a platform co-founded by Dmitri Mirakyan, offers AI-generated dating profiles. It has already produced more than 500,000 profiles, and the site draws roughly 200,000 visits a month.

Communication Tools

Talking to potential matches is the whole reason a dating site exists. Instant messaging tools let you learn about people and build trust ahead of a date. Many sites make it easy to find common ground, connect, and chat in a low-pressure way.

Members can express themselves through private messages, virtual gifts, and emojis for a more playful touch, plus voice recordings that convey their personality and overall vibe. Texting isn’t everyone’s strength, and some people shine on the phone or face to face, so a wide range of communication tools is a plus.

Kinds of Dating Sites

Whatever you’re into, there’s a dating site for it. Whether you want people who share your lifestyle preferences, your sexuality, or your cultural upbringing, a website exists for you.

Mainstream Dating Sites

You know the heavy hitters. You’ve likely heard, listened to, or watched ads for OkCupid, Match, and eharmony. They’re among the foundational dating sites, launched more than 20 years ago, and they’ve been hugely successful online matchmakers.

eharmony, a well-liked dating service, launched in 2000.

Match’s membership keeps growing, and it draws serious daters. eharmony says it’s responsible for more than 2 million happy American couples. OkCupid, meanwhile, became the pioneer among dating apps in going big on gender identity, with more than 60 LGBTQ+ choices available for profiles.

Niche Dating Sites

Niche dating sites recognize that no two people are alike. Some singles are searching for someone who matches their interests, values, cultural background, or other preferences. Faith-based options include JDate for Jewish people and Christian Mingle for Christians. Beyond those, BLK serves Black singles and Chispa serves Latin singles.

Match Group created Chispa to bring Hispanic singles together.

FarmersOnly is a niche platform where farmers look for love. Feeld is built for polyamorous and kinky folks hoping to meet like-minded people. WooPlus offers curvy singles a safe space, while HER was created by and for queer women.

Niche services are built around particular lifestyles, cultures, and interests. They appeal to a diverse range of people seeking specific kinds of connections, many of whom feel passed over on mainstream platforms and have more luck in smaller dating pools designed for them.

Casual Dating Websites

Looking for a casual hookup? Plenty of sites can scratch that itch.

Consider Ashley Madison, a dating site for married people that has been behind many affairs (and likely more than a few divorces). Its membership reportedly tops 80 million users. Despite the unflattering picture painted by the Netflix doc “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies, and Scandal,” the affair site appears to be thriving.

Ashley Madison earned notoriety by openly courting people looking for affairs.

And then there’s Tinder, of course: the original swiping app, with more than 97 billion matches (yes, billion with a B) to its name. It’s known as a hookup app, though some long-term relationships have started with a swipe right.

The User Experience in 4 Steps

A dating platform’s success can hinge on the user experience. Nobody can predict how a user’s journey will go after joining an app or site, but ideally it’s more good than bad.

A site’s functionality can shape the outcome. Consider how much depends on solid safety measures, messaging choices, and profile browsing options. When the process is smooth, simple, and easy to follow, the experience is packed with conversations and connections.

When it’s confusing, unappealing to look at, or short on safety precautions, users end up disappointed and will probably leave the platform before long.

1. Register and Set up a Profile

Joining a dating site means handing over certain information. Some sites run profile verification by email or text message, a secure way of confirming you’re really the person you claim to be.

Don’t be caught off guard by how personal the information for a dating profile can get — unless, naturally, you’re on a site built for anonymity, such as Ashley Madison.

Be genuine and original in your profile bio. Avoid generic phrases.

The fuller the profile, the more material the match algorithm has. Plenty of details also help users get acquainted and build a sense of trust.

Certain details, like your age, are required. Still, fact-checking is light. You’re free to use a fake name to keep your identity safe, and you can also make some details private so the average user can’t see them.

2. Browsing and Matching

After that, you’ll swipe or search for matches. Basically, you’ll look through potential matches’ profiles and decide whether to reach out with a like or a message. It’s a bit like online shopping, only for a date or partner.

Browsing is free on most platforms.

When browsing profiles, it helps to know what you want and what you won’t compromise on. That way, as you scroll through potential matches, you can respond instinctively to your values and needs rather than to your first impression of a photo.

Once you spot someone you want to match with, you’ll tap or swipe on their profile, after which either of you can send the first message. Some apps put time limits or membership requirements on messaging, which I’ll cover next.

3. Messaging Options

Matching with someone lets you exchange private text messages. Restrictions such as time limits or paywalls may apply. And naturally, you can’t message anyone who has blocked you.

When Covid lockdowns hit, many dating services began letting users leave voice messages or videos alongside texts. That helps you get a feel for how the person sounds and for their energy and personality. Texting suits some people; voice memos suit others. It comes down to personal preference.

Consider sending a voice or video chat if this option is available.

Premium messaging perks may include private photo sharing and video calls inside the app, and emojis and gifs may be available too. Certain extras, read receipts among them, cost money and exist only on some sites and apps.

As long as the right safety features exist, messaging online is generally secure. For online security, it’s crucial that you can block and report fellow members.

4. Safety Considerations

Keep your safety in mind whenever you’re on a dating site. It’s comforting to assume most users have good intentions, but there’s no denying the reality of bad behavior such as identity theft, phishing, and romance scams.

Do not send money to anyone you met online.

Some catfishing profiles look like a perfect match but are really a criminal or a bot. By some findings, roughly half of dating site and app users (52%) report matching with someone who was out to scam them.

To guard against scams and harassment, some sites offer safety tools such as reporting or blocking a user.

Membership Choices

Once you register with a dating site, you’re automatically a member, though you may spot a few upgrade options along the way.

Most dating sites charge membership fees you can choose to pay weekly, monthly, or yearly.

Paid subscriptions are a great pick if you want a bit more nurturing as you date online, since they open up access to more premium features.

Paid members tend to be serious daters.

Those features might mean extra match recommendations, greater visibility, or additional search filters. In some cases, messaging costs money too.

Men and women may see different subscription prices. Men usually pay more than women, since they tend to have a harder time finding matches, particularly when their profiles aren’t drawing attention.

Free Membership

For most people joining a dating site, free membership is the starting point. It comes with the basics, such as setting up a profile and browsing.

OkCupid promotes a fully free experience that includes messaging in its basic plan.

Anyone who wants additional preferences (think education, religion, or height) or a bigger daily swipe allowance can buy an upgraded membership package. It won’t necessarily mean more matches, but it can help narrow the search for the right person in the dating pool.

OkCupid is one site that offers unlimited messaging for free. Users can talk as long as they like without any hidden fees.

I suggest testing an app’s basic features before you upgrade to a paid subscription. That way, you can see whether the site fits what you’re looking for.

Pay As You Go

Who knew dating apps might feel like playing a video game? Some sites and apps run on a credit system, letting you buy credits that unlock particular features, usually direct messages. It’s a bit like placing bets on love, lust, or whatever you’re chasing.

Zoosk logo

Zoosk offers a credit system alongside a monthly subscription and a free membership.

Zoosk Coins are a digital currency that covers some features in the Zoosk app. You can purchase a big batch of coins, or get them free by telling a friend about Zoosk or following its social media accounts.

Spending credits lets you send virtual gifts, voice chats, and messages without being tied to recurring payments.

Keeping a stash of credits can cost less than a monthly subscription plan. Just pay as you go! Buy a credit, and it unlocks a special feature for you.

It’s a great fit for users unwilling to put too much into online dating who still want the perks of paid features. It also suits people who want to message one particular person and connect with them on a deeper level.

Challenges and Possible Solutions

As I noted earlier, dating sites can be hotbeds of dishonesty, manipulation, and even petty crime. Still, reputable platforms such as Match and Bumble have led the way with features that make the experience safer and simpler to handle.

Security Concerns and Scams

Online daters need to take safety seriously and understand the risks of finding love matches online. A site’s safety features can catch some scam profiles and bad actors, though not all of them. Many mainstream dating sites confirm your identity with a selfie, your phone number, or email. If a site didn’t put you through any profile verification when you signed up, be cautious about the profiles you come across.

Romance scammers use lies to get in your good graces. Once they've won your trust, the requests for money and favors start.

With AI technology and data tracking, sites can screen new profiles and confirm that users are who they claim to be.

And naturally, daters screen each other online too. The more users talk, the more they learn about each other and the more confident they feel about meeting in person. Some take extra safety steps, like a phone call or a Facetime video before meeting up. A video date is a smart way to confirm someone looks like their profile.

Perpetuating Biases

Match algorithms on online dating sites can amplify biases and reflect today’s cultural consciousness, whether for good or ill. Racism and bigotry, along with implicit bias, can rear their ugly heads in dating. We may have evolved into civilized humans (mostly), but we still tend to stick with certain types in our romantic choices.

“I feel like there is room, honestly, to say, ‘I have a preference for somebody who looks like this.’ And if that person happens to be of a certain race, it’s hard to blame somebody for that.” — Ari Curtis, blogger

OkCupid enforces a zero-racism policy (as most sites do, of course), and in 2017 it even made a show of banning a white supremacist. Users’ like histories, however, can reveal some unpleasant tendencies in their dating preferences. According to one study, Black people were 10 times likelier to like the dating profile of a white person than the reverse.

Video Chats Can Offer Assurance

If you’re not sure an online chat deserves your time, money, and energy, try a phone call — or, even better, a video chat.

Keep in mind that photos show only one dimension of someone’s personality. On video, you can see the person up close, get a feel for how they talk, and tell whether the two of you have a spark.

A video date can be a good first step.

You might think you feel chemistry through a text or voice message, only for it to vanish in person or on video. My advice: Ask a match to video chat before you agree to meet. That way, you save emotional labor, energy, and time up front.

Can AI Features Save Users From Burnout?

AI is creeping into every corner of daily life and communication, and online dating is no exception. It isn’t necessarily a bad tool, but it does have ripple effects you should be aware of.

You can lean on AI to draft your dating profile bio or answer prompts, but always put your own personal spin on it so the writing comes across as genuine rather than robotic!

AI features can aid online daters.

Adding AI-generated images to your profile might be tempting, but I’d strongly advise against it, since it could come across as deceptive and get you kicked off a dating service. What you can do is feed a few of your own photos to your AI chat tool of choice and have it pick the ones best suited to a dating profile.

If dating apps are new to you and you’re on the introverted side, AI can be a solid wingman and reality check. It can also help you come up with a good pickup line — just take steps to make sure your natural voice comes through.

Just paste in text messages or paragraphs that show how you talk, enter the command “learn my voice,” and then tell it what you want it to produce (i.e., “write 10 pickup lines for me”).

Online Dating Keeps Shaping People’s Lives

Online dating has come a long way since newspaper classifieds. Today it’s a whole industry that serves people of every background and identity. It’s a thrilling new frontier for love and casual dates, but staying safe while searching a sea of people for the right match can feel overwhelming.

Dating sites matter: they’re where people go for relationships, dates, sexual connections, and all that lies between. They aren’t going anywhere soon, and as AI features arrive, user profiles will only get more polished.

Whatever you’re after, modern dating sites have something for everybody. All you have to do is try one. Good luck!
